Should you be using the house when neither Simon or Kevin is around, we ask you to please take a moment to read through this list for some important things you need to know about the house. Also, there is a checklist of things to do before you leave the house at the end of your stay. Thanks.
Rooms
Ground floor
The Drama room has 1 queen bed.
The Bunk room has 1 XL twin bed over 1 queen bed.
The Dartmouth room has 1 double bed.
Middle level
The Ansel Adams room has 1 queen bed
The Single room has 1 twin bed
We request that no one use the master bedroom.
General
The house is fully supplied with towels, linens, pillows, etc., and the kitchen is fully stocked. All you should need to bring are personal effects and toiletries. When you show up, any sheets on any beds (whether made or not) are clean. If there are no sheets on your bed, then check in the dryer or the bottom drawer of the bureau in your room. There are also extra pillows and blankets in each room. Towels are in the linen closet opposite the single bedroom.
Kitchen
Stove
In addition to the regular burners, the stovetop has griddle and grill units. Both the griddle and grill use the same gas attachment. The attachment and units are located in the top drawer of the lower cupboard to the right of the stove. Please feel free to use them. If you use the grill, please clean the catch basin with Comet (under the sink). All iron and steel stovetop parts can go in the dishwasher, gas elements cannot. Should you need instruction, the user manuals for the stove and other appliances are in the cupboard to the right of the refrigerator, second shelf from the top.
Dishwasher
Please do not put the following items in the dishwasher:
•cast iron skillets* - they are will rust.
•the coffee thermoses - water gets between the layers.
•Chicago Cutlery knives (and anything, knives or otherwise that has a wooden handle or part) - the handle will loosen if repeatedly put in the dishwasher.
•big wine glasses - they don't really fit, and will break if you try.
* The cast iron skillets are antiques and require special cleaning. Please do not use them unless you know are prepared to clean them properly: after cooking, soak in very hot water, scrub out with steel or copper wool, dry completely, then season with vegetable oil and paper towel. Do not use soap on them! Make sure to cover the entire cooking surface of the inside of the skillet (including the side walls) or it will rust, which would be bad.
Garbage Disposal
To use the garbage disposal, turn on the right switch on the panel located to the right of the sink. Make sure that you never run the disposal dry, there should always be water in it. When you are done with it for the weekend, make sure you run a good amount of water through it and ensure that you do not have any solids left in it. They can become quite stinky and also gunk up the drain.
Trash/Recycling
There is a trash compactor in the kitchen next to the sink. Compactor bags are located under the kitchen sink. There is a garbage disposal in the smaller basin of the kitchen sink. If you are not sure whether something can go down it, then put it in the compactor.
Recycling goes in both of the bins located on the pull-out shelf of the pantry cabinet to the right of the refrigerator. Recycling must be in clear bags. There are clear bags located under the kitchen sink. Killington recycles aluminum, #1 and #2 plastics, milk jugs, and all unbroken glass. Twist ties for all bags are in the drawer below the cutlery. When they need to be taken out, both the clear recycling bags and compactor bags, as well as any other trash bags, go in the brown bins outside the front door. Refuse is collected weekly in the winter on Saturday mornings.
Heat
Most of the house has electric heat. There is a thermostat in each room as well as the downstairs hallway. When you arrive, these should each be set at 50 degrees, except bathrooms, which are set at 55. Adjust them as you please where you need them, but make sure to set them back to 50 (55 in bathrooms) when you leave the house. The only room that does not have electric heat is the big room upstairs (NB: there is a thermostat behind the couch, but it does not do anything). There is a wall-mounted heater under the clock. It has a thermostat under a cover on the top right-hand side of the console. I find the most effective way to heat that room is to set that at about 1/3 power (play with it to see what is comfortable), and to turn the ceiling fan on low. The control for the fan is behind the drape closest to the heater.
The fireplace is operational, and there is wood in the carport. Please make sure to open the damper before lighting a fire.
Hot Tub
The hot tub should be OK to use. You can get to it by going out onto the deck behind the master bedroom and down the stairs. Things you need to keep in mind are:
•Water level - if the water level is low enough to have any exposed jets, you will need to fill it up. There is a hose in the crawlspace, which you can get into from the bottom square door immediately to your left when you come into the house, at the bottom of the stairs. The faucet next to the hot tub.
•Chemicals - there is a chemical treatment box in the closet on your left as you enter the house (the square door above the entrance to the crawlspace). In it there are litmus testers. Follow the directions on the bottle. To add chemicals, if necessary, press the "Clean" button on the console and scatter solid chemicals across the water surface. Keep the hot tub cover open for the duration of the clean cycle. The hot tub holds 500 gallons of water, so calculate amounts accordingly
•Settings - keep the hot tub at temperature even when you leave the house. It is well insulated.
Renting ski/snowboard equipment
As far as renting equipment, you can get stuff from Killington, but we recommend going to the Basin ski shop and their sister snowboard outfit Out of Bounds. They are in the same building (www.basinski.com, also a good spot for weather reports and condition updates). If you're feeling particularly industrious on Friday, they are open until midnight, so you can stop in on your way to the house and sort out your rentals for the next day then and there. Tell 'em Kevin sent you so you get treated right and so they know how much business I send their way ;-). If you decide to stop there, then turn left onto the Killington Access Road and follow it until you see the Basin on the right.
